Macario Sacay o Makario Sakay

Macario Sacay o Makario Sakay

Macario Sacay was a Filipino general in the Philippine Revolution against Spain and in the Philippine-American War.  He continued fighting against the United States even after Emilio Aguinaldo was captured in 1901 and the Americans officially declared the war over  in 1902.

A few people believe Macario Sacay was nothing more than a mere bandit.  That was how the Americans he fought against labeled him. He became a household name because of movies made about him, one biopic  was directed by Lamberto Avellana in the 1950s and another by Raymond Red in the 1990s, starring popular Filipino actor Julio Diaz.

Macario Sacay (also commonly spelled as Makario
Sakay) was born in 1870 in Tondo, Manila. He made a living as a barber, tailor and occasional actor. In 1894, Sakay joined  and then became head of Dapitan, the Manila branch of the revoutionary organization Katipunan. He participated in battles against foreign forces alongside Andres Bonifacio.

Early in the Philippine-American War, he was arrested, but was granted amnesty in 1902. He soon founded the
Republika ng Katagalugan (the Tagalog Republic) and he was its president. The Americans hunted him down and he was captured in 1906. He was brought to Bilibid Prison and convicted as a bandit. He was hanged in 1907.
